Single-Stream Junk Collection, A 2016 Success

Single-stream recycling is a system in which all recyclables are all mixed together – metals, papers, plastics, etc. all in one container – for collection, rather than being sorted into separate categories. Through an eye-opening report that was just released in December, Frog Hauling is proud to see just how this particular method is a hallmark of success in country-wide sustainability! See how single-stream junk collection is a tell-tale sign of successful waste management!

Single Stream Junk Collection

2016 Success For Recycling and Sustainability

The EPA and The Recycling Partnership released their 2016 State of Curbside Report that analyzed data from the 465 curbside recycling programs. The key performance indicator was annual pounds of recyclables collected per household. Areas of the country that had higher performing programs showed the following attributes:

  • 100% of these programs had some type of public action that influenced curbside recycling
  • 96% were single-stream, where all recycling materials are collected together, for later sorting
  • 93% collected automatically
  • 83% of those high-performing communities were using carts

A Sustainable Columbus Dumpster Rental and Hauling Service

Single-stream recycling is clearly a success for sustainability! Here at Frog Hauling, we are honored to not only play a part in offering single-stream collection but also take it a step further by accepting junk along with your recyclables and reusables in one convenient receptacle. All efforts are made to sort the recyclables from the junk to be processed or donated sustainably.

Can Columbus’s Sustainable Practices Save The Human Race?

Columbus Sustainable PracticesWe have a big challenge in the way of sustainability and human life. Is the negative impact we’ve left on our planet too far gone? How can we as individuals prevent an ecological disaster? Can Columbus’s sustainable practices save the human race?

Global Environmental Concerns

We all know the over-the-top science fiction movie scenarios: battling for fuel, post-apocalyptic wastelands, fleeing home to colonize other planets (terraforming, anyone?), or even life on flooded Earth – when was the last time you watched Waterworld? Believe it or not, there are soon-ish plans for mankind to journey to and colonize Mars (see: the Mars One mission). Even Steven Hawking recently stated that humans could be extinct within the next 1,000 years if we don’t find a new planet to live on. But is ditching our planet entirely necessary? Isn’t there anything we can do to elongate our stay on Earth?

Government Role In Sustainability

The truth is, we can’t fully depend on grandiose plans of fleeing a planet voided of ecology or livability. Big surprise, right? We need to be conscious of our impact on planet Earth and extend our stay as long as possible. Governmental agencies and programs, of course, play a large role in delegating action and legislation for promoting sustainability.

Institutions such as the Environmental Protection Agency and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry help in many areas such as reducing of the dangerous air pollutants, sustainable and safe water infrastructures (see Clean Water Act), banning of toxic chemicals, environmental monitoring, and education and encouragement. Of course, these efforts are ultimately dependent on participation at the community and individual level.

Sustainable Practices For Columbus, Ohio

Here at Frog Hauling, we recently touched on the many plans and programs Columbus has in place to incentivise, promote, and aid in a greener Columbus community. Columbus’s Green Initiatives, The Green Columbus Fund, The Columbus Energy Challenge, grant opportunities and green building incentives have made great strides in reducing energy use and waste in buildings, homes and the community.

The answer is to do what we can individually, and engage in our communities on a local level, to promote ecology, sustainability, and a healthy environment. Educating ourselves and implementing available resources for ecology is key. It’s true, we have global environmental concerns worthy of a cinematic saga. As these concerns are confronted through government and followed through by the community, it’s up to us as individuals to use these tools to put the plan into action.

Frog Hauling does its part for sustainability. We take every opportunity to sort and recycling the reusables from the waste. Looking for a dumpster rental and hauling service that cares about the community?

Central Ohio To Benefit From Recycling Plan

waste removal landfillA plan is under way for Franklin County that can generate revenue while promoting sustainability. Preventing a good deal of trash through sorting, composting and recycling, this would prevent the need for another landfill.

Franklin County Waste Stream Plan

The plan promises to lower garbage fees, generate 40 million dollars and extend the life of Jackson Township’s 32 year-old landfill by years beyond its projected 56-year lifespan.

As a long term waste management debt is being paid off, it allows for the waste hauler’s dumping fee to be reduced from $42.75 to $39.75 per ton, with the savings hoping to be passed onto Franklin County residents and businesses. As Franklin County’s recycling rate nears 40% the Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio plans to further recycle and divert more trash away from the landfill. If the sorting is done well, there could be a good market for it. Read SWACO’s full executive summary here.

The Benefits of Sorting Recycling From The Waste

Recycling is a simple way in which every person can contribute to a better world. There are more benefits of recycling than just reducing the amount of trash we throw out. After all, it takes time and effort to collect, separate and send away the trash. Here are a few of the benefits that come along with this:
