If your dumpster sits on your own driveway or anywhere else on your private property, you do not need a dumpster permit in Columbus. If it sits in the street, on the sidewalk, or anywhere else in the public right-of-way, the City of Columbus requires a permit before it can be dropped off. That’s the whole rule, and for most homeowners it ends at “put it in the driveway and don’t worry about it.”
Not every project has a driveway to spare, though, and the suburbs each do things their own way. Below is how the city handles it, what a permit takes, and how a mini dumpster usually lets you skip the paperwork altogether.

Street placement falls under the city’s Chapter 903 right-of-way occupancy permit, the same permit contractors pull to stage equipment or fencing in the street. It’s issued by the Department of Public Service’s Right-of-Way Permit Section.
The practical test: could a car, a cyclist, or someone on the sidewalk otherwise use the spot where the dumpster is going? If yes, plan on a permit.

What if the street is your only option?
Some jobs leave no choice: a house with no driveway, a storefront that opens right onto the sidewalk, a project where the driveway itself is being torn out. If the dumpster has to go in the street, take it in this order:
- Apply for the right-of-way permit first through portal.columbus.gov/permits, with lead time before your project starts.

- Pick the smallest size that honestly fits the job, so the container blocks as little of the street as possible.
