Family Reunion Disposal Solution

The family reunion may not be the most anticipated event of the summer, but it can be an even better time if the cleanup is made easier. Big families can produce a lot of unwanted items in a short amount of time, so having a place to toss it all is a must. Have every family member chip in a few bucks and the cost is covered. After the reunion, give Frog Hauling a call and we will transport all of the remnants of your party in one of our 6 cubic yard dumpsters to your preferred destination.

Corporate Celebrations

Corporate parties can be interesting. You never know what can happen when coworkers get together outside of the confines of the workplace. One thing that is guaranteed to happen, however, is that a lot of unwanted items will be created from the event. Having a Frog Hauling dumpster ready for you to load at the event can keep the unwanted items confined to one location, thus creating a more pleasant environment and a better overall experience for everyone in attendance.

QLWIIBIEWMWedded Bliss Without the Rubbish

A wedding is one of the most special days in someone’s life. Many couples are going for outdoor receptions, unique locations or home weddings. These are great ideas, but then you have to ask:

What happens to all of the unwanted items when 200 guests start tossing their cake plates and champagne bottles?

No one wants to think about transporting unwanted items after their wedding day. A Frog Hauling dumpster container can be tucked out of sight and ready to be loaded and can make the wedding cleanup much more coordinated and quick so the happy couple can be onto their honeymoon.

Not So Fast….Don’t Just Lob Those Used Light Bulbs Into The Trash!

Light-bulbs-ready-for-recycling-300x212Is it time to replace old, dim lighting? You may want to think twice before throwing your old bulbs into the trash. Different types of light bulbs require different disposal methods. Help protect others and the environment from potentially hazardous materials found in light bulbs.

Incandescent Light Bulbs

Contains: Non-toxic substances

Chances are your home is filled with these traditional light bulbs. Since these bulbs are not very energy efficient at all, many people find they are replacing these with newer, energy efficient counterparts like LED’s and CFL’s. Most cities will not take these bulbs in recycling bins, but since they do not contain toxic substances, you can just toss them in the trash. However, it is recommended that you put them back in their original box (although who keeps lightbulb boxes for years?) or just use the box of the new bulbs you are replacing them with. This keeps broken glass from hurting someone else in the trash.

Halogen Light Bulbs

Contains: Halogen gas

These lights are usually used as flood lights. Since these lights contain a halogen gas, many recycling companies won’t take these lightbulbs. However, just like incandescent bulbs, you can just toss these in the trash in either a plastic bag or used box to prevent glass from hurting someone.

Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs

Contains: Mercury

These are those little spiral bulbs you have been buying lately to make you feel more energy efficient. As long as they stay intact, CFL’s are perfectly safe. The problem is…tossing a glass bulb into a garbage can is almost certain to break it. A broken bulb has the potential to release harmful mercury into the environment. Mercury in the environment = big problems. Home Depot and Ikea make it easy to recycle used CFL bulbs purchased from their stores. Didn’t buy your bulbs at these stores? Simply input your city and state to http://search.earth911.com/ and find the closest CFL recycling center to you.

If you happen to break a CFL bulb at your home, follow these steps to safely remove it:

  1. Wear protective gloves, masks, and clothing to guard yourself against the dust and
  2. Collect all of the broken pieces and place them in a sealed container.
  3. Take the broken light bulb to your closest recycling site/ hardware store.

*Note-fluorescent bulbs (those long tubes that are probably in your closet, basement workshop, or maybe even kitchen) are treated the same way as CFL’s, as they also contain mercury.

LED Lights

Contains: Nickel, Lead, and some arsenic.

Although these materials sound frightening, as long as these bulbs are disposed of properly they usually do not cause problems. However, rather than tossing them in the trash like you would with an incandescent bulb, these bulbs are up to 95% recyclable. Use that same helpful website above to locate a recycling center near you or take them back to the hardware store you bought them from.

Advice To Make Your Lightbulbs Work For You:

  1. Just replacing five of your most commonly used incandescent light bulbs with energy efficient choices such as CFL’s can save you $75 per year. That’s a really nice meal out!
  2. Make use of natural light in your home during the day. No sense wasting energy and money having lights turned on when Mother Nature can do the job for free.
  3. Use timers and dimmers to control the amount of energy you use in your lightbulbs. Having “smart” lighting that will turn on and off only when needed saves money and energy and prolongs the life of your lightbulbs.
  4. LED’s are great choices for outdoor lighting, as they are energy efficient, durable, and perform well in cold temperatures. Even better, use solar-powered lighting if possible outdoors to make the cost run them ideal: free!

Recycling

With the rise of the environmental conservation movement in the seventies and eighties, the idea of solid waste recycling began to boom across America. As we get farther into the 21st century however, the recycling rate in the United States is starting to back off its exponential path. Bigtime!

The United States is in a Recycling Nationwide Crises
Recently, the CEO of the Waste Management company declared the United States is in a “nationwide crisis” when it comes to recycling. The issue is that recycling in America has become significantly less profitable in the last couple of years with a multitude of factors including the lowering of commodity prices for recycled goods, less foreign demand and the increased cost to recycle material waste. Many waste management companies can’t afford to keep their recycling plants active which has led to many closing all over the United States with the extra recycled materials going straight to the landfill. Residential recycling would still be possible without a public service but citizens would have to take more responsibility in disposing of recyclable waste but would lead to an even steeper drop in recycling rates. While it’s hard to control demand and commodity pricing, the increased cost and difficulty to recycle can actually be derived from new practices in residential recycling.

The Recyclables Need to Be Sorted Still.

When cities and waste management companies were trying to get more people to recycle around the turn of the 21st century, the most viable way to increase recycling rates was to make it easier. People were told it was okay to mix material types like cardboard, plastic, and glass and encouraged putting any item that contained recyclable materials into the bin. The issue here is that these materials need to be completely sorted to be recycled and sold as a commodity, or else the product would be seen as tainted (if a unit of paper contains a noticeable amount of glass shards, it can’t be sold until it is re-filtered).

Bigger Bins Means Bigger Recycling Headaches.

Recycling bins in many communities around the country have been getting larger and larger, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it encourages people to “recycle” larger items which contain non-recyclable materials or are just non-recyclable in the first place. With larger bins, many people don’t think they have to break down larger items such as cardboard boxes which costs the recycling plant more money in break-down and filter.

Recyling has cecreased over the past decades

What Can You Do?

All of these issues become financial burdens for waste management companies; which does greater harm considering the current market conditions for recycled waste. As citizens, the best thing to do is learn better recycling practices. This includes:

  • knowing if all the items in your recycling bin are completely recyclable,
  • breaking down larger items to shorten the process at the plant
  • and making sure glass and other easily shattered materials are kept intact when placed in the bin.

Where Would You Like To See Get Cleaned Up?

Frog Hauling to host The: “Give A Buck Street Cleanup” Event;
A Costumed Community Event for Superheroes.
superhero cleanup
When: Oct 18th, 10:00 AM
Where: TBD
Why: Cause we give a “B”uck.
Who: You.
First. Send us pictures of proposal sites. Email-us us or post the pic to Facebook, Twitter, or Google+ with the tag #sutj (Show Us The Junk).

Frogs are very sensitive to the environment, we do not like foreign contaminates in our ecological area. Trash in our communities acts as foreign contaminates in our ecology; the least that we can do is put trash in the correct place.

Trash in our community is dangerous. Kids can fall on trash and get cut, people biking to work can get flat tires on broken glass, trash attracts rats which are just “Yuck!”

Trash in our community hurts our economy. People come to Columbus Ohio to visit and spend money, they see a trashed area, they turn around and head for a cleaner, safer community.

Trash hurts the human spirit. When an area is trashed, we feel trashed. Do you know the feeling when you have organized your desktop, your desk, your office, or your bedroom? You feel empowered, efficient, capable of handling anything the world throws at you; what we see in our neighborhoods is like this as well. When we see clean walkways, streets, and yards we feel empowered, happy, and calm.

Clean streets show people we give a “B”uck! If a street is trashed, people will add to the trash. If the streets are clean, people will hopefully keep them clean.

Please send us photos of trashed areas that you would like see get some creative community spirit at #sutj or Upload Them HERE.
