Recycled coffee beans are the newest source of biodiesel fuel. Researchers at the University of Nevada and the University of Cincinnati have developed a process of extracting oil from the used coffee grinds and converting it into biodiesel fuel.

Alternative Energy Sources

The search for alternative fuel sources is nothing new. Biofuels are highly touted for reducing carbon emissions. Popular sources are soybeans and corn. These foods are also in high demand. This places additional cost and economic strain on their use.

Used coffee grounds are abundant and reduce landfill.

Worldwide coffee growth is estimated at around 16 billion pounds per year. Most of the used grounds make their way into landfills. The U.S. alone deposits nearly 1 million tons each year. Thus, the source of the fuel is already being created, and this method would greatly reduce the amount of waste deposited into landfills. In addition, the extraction process is relatively inexpensive.

Ongoing research is being conducted to improve the efficiency of the process and make it operational on a large scale. Frog Hauling congratulates these and all researchers working to make a cleaner world for future generations.

INEOS Bio has begun producing biofuel on a large scale. The process involves creating ethanol from vegetative, wood and yard waste, which is different from the biofuel currently being created from food crops.

Innovative Eco-Friendly Fuel

This is a unique and exciting breakthrough in the push for renewable energy. The final goal is a self-sustaining plant that eliminates more carbon gases than it uses! The initial factory (right) is located in Vero Beach, FL, right next to a landfill. The factory uses methane gas from the landfill to operate, and will eventually use the garbage and other waste for producing fuel. Biofuel is created and leftover energy is sent back to the grid for use, eliminating the need for other sources of energy. The space created by removing wood waste will be used to plant new trees and plants.

Cleaning Up in Columbus, OH

Congratulations to Coach Urban Meyer and The Ohio State Buckeyes on a perfect season! The Buckeyes finished a surprising 12-0 this year and third in the AP Poll. In just his first season at Ohio State, Coach Meyer renewed the football program to its elite status, and the team cleaned up the competition. This is a major turnaround from last year’s 6-7 finish. The last time the Buckeyes finished the regular season undefeated, they won the National Championship in 2002. Though a self imposed sanction prevents them from playing in a Bowl Game this year, this is a glimpse into the great things to come.

The Buckeyes stand poised to repeat perfection and capture another Big 10 Championship and trip to the BCS National Title Game! Star quarterback and Heisman hopeful Braxton Miller will be returning next season, along with a stong core of the defense that shutout Michigan in the second half of a 26-21 victory to seal this year’s perfect season. Next season’s schedule also bodes well for the Buckeyes, with only a couple games posing a serious threat.

This is definitely the dawning of a new era!
