Solid Waste Authority Central OhioThe Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio (SWACO) has created some tips for Columbus households to be “Zero Waste.” This will increase the level of sustainability for all.

What does it mean to be “Zero Waste?”

Zero Waste means obtaining resources, using them, producing waste, and utilizing that waste to obtain more resources. One of the biggest ways to live sustainably is to follow the “urban metabolism method.” It is basically mimicking an ecosystem where everything is utilized so there is no waste. This can be done by being conscious consumers, recycling, composting and reusing everything possible.

Ways to be Zero Waste:

1. Reusable Shopping Bags -reduces paper and plastic waste, saves trees and water – Three R’s-reduce, reuse, recycle whenever possible

Ohio Governor Kasich Plans to Sign Controversial Renewable Energy Bill

recycle columbus ohA revised Senate Bill 310 has passed the Ohio House this week, and Governor John Kasich is planning to sign it into legislation. The Bill was revised after the original draft, that passed the Ohio Senate, was considered highly controversial.

The Senate approved minor changes made to the Bill by the Ohio House. Those who opposed the original Bill had hoped that Governor Kasich would veto it. In short, the Bill will place a “freeze” on “green” energy standards. It would also end the requirement that utilities purchase at least half of their renewable energy from within Ohio.

The revised Bill still has many people on both sides of the issue unhappy. Government officials and businesses alike are split on the direction Ohio needs to take. Some say the standards are too costly, while others believe reducing them will cost Ohioans jobs and increase air pollution.

Ohio Tax Break for Purchasing Alternative Fuel Vehicle

Ohio flagIn an effort to keep Ohio’s march toward energy independence moving forward, the Ohio House has proposed a bill.

Alternative Fuel Tax Incentive

The bill offers a tax credit for the purchase of a new alternative-fuel vehicle or the conversion of a vehicle to alternative fuel, such as natural gas. The credit would be 50 percent of the price of the conversion, or the price difference between a new alternative-fuel vehicle and a traditional gasoline-powered vehicle. The credit would be capped at $5,000 to $25,000, depending on the vehicle weight.

“Passage of this bill will bring Ohio energy independence, enabling our residents to pay less at the pump,” said Rep. Sean O’Brien.

The Bill will now go to the Senate for approval.

Scott grew weary of forgetting to put the trash out and forgetting garbage collection times. Columbus has long used a color-coded system to designate which days certain residents will have garbage pick up. However, procedural policies can sometimes create confusion, especially when it comes to holidays. Garbage day always gets moved back a day after the nine observed holidays.
