Columbus, OH has added hydraulic launch assist to four of its refuse trucks. These new hybrid trucks will help slow the vehicles and reduce brake use. The city will save on both fuel and maintenance costs. City leaders will evaluate the effectiveness of the new trucks and decide whether or not to purchase more.

Columbus city truckColumbus residents can help their homes become “green” by purchasing a rain barrel. These barrels hold 65 gallons and are designed to catch rain water as it flows out of the drain. This will reduce demand on the water supply and cost for the home owner. The cost of the barrel is $45, one-third of the normal price. This special price is available to Columbus residents who register their homes as a GreenSpot.

Weekend Fun In Columbus, OH

It’s the middle of August. Parents and kids are preparing for another school year. But there is still plenty of time for summer fun. Take the family out for two days of fun in the sun at Festival Latino August 13th and 14th. The festival runs from 11-8pm both days and admission is FREE! Columbus OH Festival Latino

Come on down to Genoa Park for the 16th celebration of Columbus’ Latin-American culture. Festival Latino combines Latin flavor with family fun. Dance the day away to a variety of local and national Latin-American music acts beginning each day at noon. Don’t know how to salsa dance? No problem! You can get free instructions or watch the Latin dance demonstrations. Enjoy a wide assortment of Latin-American cuisine and the Artists’ Showcase, featuring some of Ohio’s best Latin artists. Once again the Columbus Crew will be offering a children’s soccer clinic.

This year the Children’s Area will feature COSI’s live liquid oxygen show, interactive drum circles with local musician Enrique Infante, bilingual story time, a taekwondo demonstration, and a visit from Columbus Clippers mascot Lou Seal.

Stop by the marketplace for Latin and Caribbean jewelry and crafts, a photo booth and face painting. Learn how to get involved in education and community programs. Organizations from Columbus and Central Ohio will be on hand to help you get started. Receive a health screening or bilingual information on health and social services.

The word is out! More and more people are “going green.” One area in particular where this is occurring is home improvement. With President Obama extending green home-improvement tax credits for 2011, now is the time to take action. Here are a few eco-friendly home improvement tips:

When corporations take hold of green ideals they create powerful momentum toward creating a community that lives in balance with our environment. Large corporations have immense buying power. When a company like Wal-Mart or Chipoltle buys locally they inject large sums into the local regional economy.
Corporate Green Movement Many Clothing stores like Target have huge foot traffic. Their decisions undoubtedly have an effect on the local population that shop there. When people see others ride their bike up to the front of the store and park next to the door it ignites the idea that, “they too!” can ride their bikes to the store.
Bike Riding to Target
Target made a great decision to put the bike racks near the entrance of the store. Bike riders feel that their bike is safe if it is near the door where many people are coming in and out. A good bike can cost more than a thousand dollars; a bike rack out away from everything is bait for thieves and vandals. The bike racks shows off a sense of “hipness” which reflects positively on the clothes and other lifestyle goods that they sell in the store. This reflects on how people perceive Target; they are definitely not the K-Mart of old. Sub-consciously we think “Target is ‘Hip’ because they have bike racks. They are in the know, forward thinking, and want a healthy clean Ohio for us to live in.” This definitely reflects in sales and reputation.

As a bike rider I will be more likely to visit a Target knowing that they have bike parking.
