A plan is under way for Franklin County that can generate revenue while promoting sustainability. Preventing a good deal of trash through sorting, composting and recycling, this would prevent the need for another landfill.
Franklin County Waste Stream Plan
The plan promises to lower garbage fees, generate 40 million dollars and extend the life of Jackson Township’s 32 year-old landfill by years beyond its projected 56-year lifespan.
As a long term waste management debt is being paid off, it allows for the waste hauler’s dumping fee to be reduced from $42.75 to $39.75 per ton, with the savings hoping to be passed onto Franklin County residents and businesses. As Franklin County’s recycling rate nears 40% the Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio plans to further recycle and divert more trash away from the landfill. If the sorting is done well, there could be a good market for it. Read SWACO’s full executive summary here.
